  1. Cannabis is dried leaves and female flowers,
  2. known as marijuana and resin known as 
  3. hashish of certain varieties of hemp 
  4. Cannabis sativa, which are smoked or 
  5. swallowed to produce a range of effects, 
  6. including euphoria and altered perception. 
  7. Cannabis is a soft drug in that any 
  8. dependence is psychological rather than 
  9. physical. It is illegal in many countries and
  10. has played little part in orthodox medicine 
  11. since the 1930s. However, this may change as
  12. recent research findings include the 
  13. discovery of cannabis receptors in the brain,
  14. and the discovery of a naturally occurring 
  15. brain chemical which yields the same effects
  16. as smoking cannabis. Researchers believe this
  17. work could lead to the exploitation of 
  18. cannabis-like compounds to treat physical 
  19. illness without affecting the mind. Cannabis
  20. has alleged beneficial effects in treating 
  21. chronic diseases such as AIDS and multiple 
  22. sclerosis. Cultivation of cannabis is illegal
  23. in the UK and USA except under licence.
